Summary

A legend begins in Dune: The Duke of Caladan, first in The Caladan Trilogy by New York Times bestselling authors Brian Herbert and Kevin J。 Anderson。

Leto Atreides, Duke of Caladan and father of the Muad’Dib。 While all know of his fall and the rise of his son, little is known about the quiet ruler of Caladan and his partner Jessica。 Or how a Duke of an inconsequential planet earned an emperor’s favor, the ire of House Harkonnen, and set himself on a collision course with his own death。 This is the story。

Through patience and loyalty, Leto serves the Golden Lion Throne。 Where others scheme, the Duke of Caladan acts。 But Leto’s powerful enemies are starting to feel that he is rising beyond his station, and House Atreides rises too high。 With unseen enemies circling, Leto must decide if the twin burdens of duty and honor are worth the price of his life, family, and love。

Yet another great installment in the Dune series! Herbert and KJA hit it out of the park! I cannot wait to read the next installment!

It’s always fun to fall back into Frank’s Duniverse for a bit as seen through the eyes of his son。 One can’t help but to flip the pages ever quicker:) I hope the new movie lives up to its billing as well!

The team of Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson are introducing a prequel trilogy to the Novel that started it all。 Dune。This 1st in the series actually has already clarified a few chains of cause that Dune just never addressed。 Way to go。A good read。

Maybe I'm on Dune overload, but this new entry was very unsatisfying, except for the war in the Caladan drug。 Duke Leto still comes across flat。 Maybe I'm on Dune overload, but this new entry was very unsatisfying, except for the war in the Caladan drug。 Duke Leto still comes across flat。 。。。more

I own all 18 Dune books, so by law I was obligated to read number 19。 I enjoyed the original 6, and the 3 preludes。 Not a fan of the 3 legends, and I haven’t gotten around to the most recent 6。Problem #1: Duke Leto and Paul play “Caladan Vice” to hunt down space drug dealers。 Nope not spice, Caladan weed, that’s the book。 Well, it would be the book 。 。 。 except 。。 。Problem #2: My book pet peeve, it’s not a whole book。 It ends on a GD cliffhanger。 And what little was in the book was super repetit I own all 18 Dune books, so by law I was obligated to read number 19。 I enjoyed the original 6, and the 3 preludes。 Not a fan of the 3 legends, and I haven’t gotten around to the most recent 6。Problem #1: Duke Leto and Paul play “Caladan Vice” to hunt down space drug dealers。 Nope not spice, Caladan weed, that’s the book。 Well, it would be the book 。 。 。 except 。。 。Problem #2: My book pet peeve, it’s not a whole book。 It ends on a GD cliffhanger。 And what little was in the book was super repetitive。I’m in the process of culling my library for when I move/retire, and it looks like I’m outtie on this series (going to have to read the schools/heroes/chronicles series to see if they make the cut)。 Anybody want my 3 prelude books? 。。。more

I read Frank Herbert's Dune for the first time in 1968 and it became and remains my favorite science fiction novel。 Since then I've read the novel a dozen times, seen the movie (disappointing), the mini-series (fair), and await with guarded optimism the forthcoming new film。 When Brian Herbert and Kevin J。 Andersen began to add to the Dune universe, I was excited to see how the new novels would expand on the themes and develop the characters, while filling in the back story。 The initial trilogy I read Frank Herbert's Dune for the first time in 1968 and it became and remains my favorite science fiction novel。 Since then I've read the novel a dozen times, seen the movie (disappointing), the mini-series (fair), and await with guarded optimism the forthcoming new film。 When Brian Herbert and Kevin J。 Andersen began to add to the Dune universe, I was excited to see how the new novels would expand on the themes and develop the characters, while filling in the back story。 The initial trilogy satisfied my expectations but sad to say after House Corrino, I found the next novel less appealing, so much so I haven't read another installment until now。The Duke of Caladan precedes Frank Herbert's first novel by one or two years。 It possesses the familiar characters who say and do the expected - mostly。 Leto is not quite the man we met on Arrakis, and while he commands loyalty, seems not the leader he ought to be, let alone the Duke whose first duty is to his people。 Having ruled Caladan for 26 generations, he knows very little about his own planet, blaming it on a universal bias since the Butlerian Jihad against 'knowing' all the answers。 In fact, by including all the original players and a few more, the book is less about Leto than a case of 'remember who X is。' Overall, the work is an adequate journeyman's effort though a somewhat heavy handed product, often repetitive, moving at a torpid pace while darting from character to character, and revealing what ought to be a crucial if odd circumstance (a drug manufacturing and smuggling operation) through a series of almost incidental happen-stances。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Been awhile between books, I generally have read something in the Dune series during my annual vacation。 I found this agreeable, but I'm a little rusty on characters and timeline, Some came back to me。 The only real issue I had was believing that Jessica would try to edit a document on the Duke's desk without using her training to assess the likelihood that Leto would discuss the contents with her and Thufir。 Just seems wait out of believable circumstances。I can only assume that the separation b Been awhile between books, I generally have read something in the Dune series during my annual vacation。 I found this agreeable, but I'm a little rusty on characters and timeline, Some came back to me。 The only real issue I had was believing that Jessica would try to edit a document on the Duke's desk without using her training to assess the likelihood that Leto would discuss the contents with her and Thufir。 Just seems wait out of believable circumstances。I can only assume that the separation between Duke and Jessica is handled in the next book, due out in a few weeks。 But it is hard now to imagine that the trust issues could ever be resolved so be so forgotten by the time the story of DUNE takes place。 That's my 2 cents。。。 。。。more

Hello??? I’m quite literally obsessed。 This is my first time reading the books outside of the original Herbert saga by Brian Herbert and Kevin J。 Anderson, and I’m addicted。 I ordered the prelude trilogy to Dune immediately after finishing this because I needed more。This book was definitely on par with the original saga。 Intertwined with multiple complex stories and familiar characters, I honestly felt at home!! I was really missing Duke Leto, Gurney Halleck, and Paul, and this book rekindled my Hello??? I was really missing Duke Leto, Gurney Halleck, and Paul, and this book rekindled my love for them。 I’m honestly so glad I got to spend more time with them。 Besides just being able to get new content with these beloved characters, Herbert and Anderson constructed a wonderful, gripping, action-packed novel that really pulls you in。This book takes place one year before the events of the first Dune book, and we mainly explore Duke Leto of Caladan’s struggles with his political role。 One thing we knew about him from the saga is that he prioritizes his people over all else, and he aims to protect them honorably。 That quality is manifested so brilliantly throughout this book。 We really got a lot of insight into why he acts the way he does, and since Duke Leto is one of my favorite characters, I was just happy I got to see a little more of him。 Additionally, there are many other subplots characteristic to Frank Herbert’s Dune involving the Bene Gesserit, Emperor Shaddam IV, and the Fenring family that adds a lot more to the economics of melange on Arrakis。 I thought it was wonderfully written and just a real pleasure to read。 I adored it, and I can’t wait for the second book in this new trilogy to come out in September!! 。。。more

This Dune book is fun, but inessential。 I am invested in the Dune Universe, so I enjoyed it。 It is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is looking to begin reading the Dune series。 Frank Herbert's original novel is the only true place to begin。 This Dune book is fun, but inessential。 I am invested in the Dune Universe, so I enjoyed it。 It is not a book that I would recommend to someone who is looking to begin reading the Dune series。 Frank Herbert's original novel is the only true place to begin。 。。。more

DisappointingThe Dune brand is overextended again with this ersatz novel, squeezing the life out of the original。 Incomplete, a sorry cliffhanger…

Pretty solid when it focuses on Leto or Paul but when it goes to others in the universe is loses its steam

I know I clicked four stars, but this book is really 3。5。 I think what bothers me is the Duke Leto presented here is not as competent as the one I know from other books。 He underestimates to many things and is to blinded by his personnel honor。 This is the first of a trilogy leading to the direct orders to move to administer Dune。 The politics are obviously leading to that, as a reader of the other Dune books will quickly realize。 I wonder if it would be better to read this book before ever read I know I clicked four stars, but this book is really 3。5。 I think what bothers me is the Duke Leto presented here is not as competent as the one I know from other books。 He underestimates to many things and is to blinded by his personnel honor。 This is the first of a trilogy leading to the direct orders to move to administer Dune。 The politics are obviously leading to that, as a reader of the other Dune books will quickly realize。 I wonder if it would be better to read this book before ever reading Dune。 I first read Dune in the 1970s and have since read all but one book of the entire series。 This is an enjoyable book with adventure and tension and I do look forward to the next book which from the proposed title will focus on Jessica。 Her interactions with the Sisterhood will prove interesting I expect。 。。。more

I cant believe herbert and anderson finally figured out how to write。 Before it was like they were trying to put a lot of words on paper, now they are actually trying to write well。 Holy smokes this was good。 The best they've done, and worth the read。 They did a few of their little irritating things like repeating themselves, but nothing that reduced this book。 I cant believe herbert and anderson finally figured out how to write。 Before it was like they were trying to put a lot of words on paper, now they are actually trying to write well。 Holy smokes this was good。 The best they've done, and worth the read。 They did a few of their little irritating things like repeating themselves, but nothing that reduced this book。 。。。more

Two stars seems fair。 Hardcore fans are likely to be turned off by the absence of depth, casual fans might find some amusement in the familiar and the fan service but ultimately dismiss the whole affair with a shrug of indifference and newbies are likely to zone out before page 50。 。。。more

thematofylakes。 thematofylakes。gr/o-doukas-tou-kaladan/ 。。。more

One of the best prequel/sequels that Brian and Kevin have produced。 It takes this mega-layered saga to new levels with more detail and background to the memorable characters created by Frank Herbert。

Part of the league to Dune, consistent with that story。
